Learning Target
I can analyze cultural elements in a memoir in order to infer how cultural identity is central to the meaning of a work.

Opening Session
Let’s talk about names! How did you get your name? Are you named after someone? Is your name common in another language? Have you ever wished you had a different name?

Work Session
Today we’re going to read a memoir called “By Any Other Name.” This is kind of a long one, so we will go through and read together as a class, stopping to discuss as usual.

After we finish reading, I want to continue our class discussion on names. Then, I would like for everyone to write a two paragraphs in which you consider how you would have felt or reacted if you had been in Santha or Premila’s position. You can make this into a short narrative story, or just describe your reactions.

Closing Session
Share out! I will take a couple volunteers to share their stories with the class!
