Standard: ELAGSE9-10RL2 Determine a theme or central idea of text and closely analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

Learning Target: I can analyze a theme in Things Fall Apart.

Opening Session: Things Fall Apart Summary

Work Session: Welcome back!

Today, as we have been for the past several days, we’re chugging right along in Things Fall Apart. We’re beginning part 2 of the book today, reading chapters 14 and 15. Our reading strategy today will be in partners – we’re going to do a little thing called the Pause Card. I will give each person 2 sticky notes (the cute lil mini ones!) While your partner is reading, your job is to call “Pause!” twice and jot down a question or comment you have on your sticky note and stick it in the book wherever you paused.

After chapter 14, we will switch roles. After everyone is finished, we will play the Stand Up game. Everyone has to stand up! Once you’ve contributed to the discussion by either sharing a pause or responding to a classmate’s pause, you can sit down. Game continues until everyone is sitting!!

Closing Session: TOTD: What are your opinions on the book so far? We’re drawing quickly to the end, so I am excited to hear what you think!

Assessment: Informal (book check)

Differentiation: Process (scaffolding)
