World Lit: Things Fall Apart, Day 1

Welcome to reading our novel, Things Fall Apart! We have 8 days before Thanksgiving Break, and by my calculation, we will take precisely 8 days to read the book. That means we had better get started!

Standard: ELAGSE9-10RL2 Determine a theme or central idea of text and closely analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

Learning Target: I can analyze folktales and proverbs to gain insight into the culture of a people.

Opening Session: Grab your copies of Things Fall Apart and your Springboards! I have a video for our opening today 🙂 This is a poem called “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats, and where the title of our novel comes from:

Work Session: Today we’re going to start reading the novel. I like to sort of step you into reading slowly, doing a little bit of I do, we do, you do. So today we will begin the reading with me reading Chapter 1. Then I will take a volunteer to read chapter 2. As we read, we will stop and discuss what’s going on and who these characters are and so forth.

After we finish reading for the day, we can use whatever time is left to flip to page 221 in our Springboard books and work on the Proverbs and Folktales activity. We may or may not have enough time to get this done, but if not, you should have time to work on it tomorrow while I’m out 🙂

Closing Session: Share out! What are your first impressions of the novel so far?

Assessment: Informal (book check)

Differentiation: Process (scaffolding)
