World Lit: What Is Cultural Identity?

Standard: ELAGSE9-10RI2 Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

Learning Target: I can compare and contrast how a central idea of a text is developed in an informational text and a personal essay.

Opening Session: Check out these two videos that bring up the same issues in two very different ways. Which one do you think is more effective? Why?

Work Session: Today we’re going to be reading, comparing, and contrasting two pieces on the same topic: Cultural Identity. Are you noticing a theme here? The first is an informational text called “What Is Cultural Identity?” and the second is called “Ethnic Hash.” We’re going to read each piece twice – the first one, I’ll read it, then you’ll go back through and reread and do the questions; the second one, I’ll have a volunteer read, then you’ll go back and do the Second Read questions.

Closing Session: Let’s do the “Check Your Understanding” activity on page 17 in your book, creating a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the two pieces we read today and summarize our class discussion.

Differentiation: Process (scaffolded writing, volunteers)

Assessment: Formative check of venn diagrams
